Formula 1 in Schools is a STEM challenge which encourages students to take the initiative. Initiative is required to form a team, as well as to cooperate in order to ensure success in all areas. Each team creates a small, CO2 powered car out of balsa wood or foam which follows the set rules and regulations. Another regulation is that each team has to attempt to complete their car with the only financial support of sponsors. Most teams opt to delegate roles to each member attempting to ensure each job is completed. These potential roles include: a person responsible for graphics, one or more responsible for the engineering of the car, someone who claims responsibility for completing the invaluable portfolio, another maintaining and creating public relations, and potentially a team manager whose job is to make sure everything is completed come the competition. As there are 3-4 Australian levels of competition (depending on where you live), only the winners, or wild card entries, continue to the higher levels, with claiming 1st place at the International Finals being the highest honour.
